LONDON:Virendra Sharma, who has been elected thrice from Ealing Southall since 2007, has confirmed his intention to contest the next election from the constituency as part of an internal exercise of the Labour Party.
Sharma, who hails from Mandhali in Jalandhar district, Punjab, is chairman of the Indo-British All Party Parliamentary Group.
The next election is due in 2022, but efforts to resolve the current Brexit impasse may lead to a mid-term election, as demanded by Labour. The party has asked all its 262 MPs to confirm their intention to ‘stand for re-selection’ as the party candidate again.
Sharma said: “Representing Ealing Southall since 2007 has been the greatest honour of my political career, and I have been proud to represent the area in one form or another for more than 40 years. ”
“At each of the last three elections, Labour’s share of the vote has increased in Ealing Southall as more people put their trust in me as the MP. I am delighted to stand again, put myself forward for their support again and to represent this area.”
