State raises sugarcane price, millers oppose it

Chandigarh: Even as private sugar mills asking the state government not to go ahead with the price hike, the Punjab government on Tuesday decided to raise sugarcane price by Rs 5 per quintal for crushing season (2014-15). With sugarcane crushing season set to start from November 20, the state government announced to raise State Agreed Price (SAP) of early, medium and late varieties of sugarcane by Rs 5 per quintal.

Chandigarh : The Punjab and Haryana High Court today issued notice of motion to the Punjab Government and its Home Secretary on a petition for quashing recent amendments made by the state Assembly to the Punjab Police Act 2007, regarding appointment of police complaints authorities’ chairmen.

Ludhiana : Veteran Akali Dal leader Jathedar Jagdev Singh Talwandi, 85, died after a brief illness here today. He is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters. Talwandi, who had been ailing for some time and was being treated at Hero DMC Heart Institute since August 20, breathed his last at 11.10 am.

Chandigarh: Adding yet another feather to its cap, Punjab on Wednesday bagged the coveted ‘Most Progressive State for Tourism’ Award. Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Shripad Yesso Naik conferred the Award to Punjab Minister for Tourism and Cultural Affairs Sohan Singh Thandal, in New Delhi.
